Bible Reading: 2 Kings 4
I didn’t ask You for this.” I’m sure that’s what Sarah was feeling as she was waiting on the promise of a son in Genesis 18. Or maybe Joseph, when he was in prison, after already having dealt with his brothers and then being sold into slavery in Genesis 39. “I didn’t ask you for this.”
What do you do when God has given you a promise that you never asked for? He just said He was going to do it. However, He has yet to perform what He said He was going to do. You may have been waiting for years, with expectation and anticipation. Telling others of what God has spoken over your life, preparing mentally and physically for the promise, nursing it and praying over it. Only to be met with nothing.
When we start to consider the promised blessing too much for us to handle, we do like the Shulamite woman in 2 Kings 4 did after the son, she never asked for died. We give it back to the one who initially gave it to us. We don’t try to figure it out. We don’t try to make it work in our own ability. We just give it back, as a way to say, “God, this was yours to begin with. I’ve done all that I can do. Now I put my faith in You to do what only You can do to bring YOUR promise back to life.”
Have you ever experienced this? Where you trusted God, not because you asked Him, but because He said He would? Maybe you are experiencing it right now. I encourage you today, to take your hands off of it and give it back to God. And watch Him bring His promise for your life back to life.
Prayer: Merciful God, this has been a long process. I have experience faith, doubt, fear, excitement, and uncertainty, all at the same time. Lord, this was initially Your promise, nothing I could have ever thought to ask for, for myself. But because You are the omniscient God, You know the deep, unspoken and unknown, desires of my heart. Thank You for giving me a glimpse of the future You have prepared for me. Now I give it to You, trusting that You will breathe life into Your promise. And I will remember to give You all the praise. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Great points made in this post. Trusting God and His power with unwavering faith opens up more doors in our lives as well. We must trust Him and surrender trying to control every moment.

God has plans for us that we can never understand on this earth. But He has some amazing things for us that we could never imagine!

The story of the Shulamite woman always affected me – why would God grant her a son that she never asked for only to let him die, but that HIS power could clearly be seen as he was brought back from death. We have to realize we are powerless over anything in our lives except our hearts and give the rest to God.
