Obedience During The Test

30 Jun

boy-wonderBible Reading: Deuteronomy 8:1-2

Focus Scripture: And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that He might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. Deuteronomy 8:2 (ESV)

“Don’t get involved in anything else.” -God

I specifically heard God tell me this one morning, as I was getting ready for work. I didn’t know at the time why He was saying this but I would soon come to understand.

I love to sing! It’s truly one of my passions. Many times, I have caught myself singing at random places, not even realizing that’s what I was doing. A song is forever playing in my heart.

Shortly after hearing God instruct me not to get involved in anything else, I was approached on three different occasions, two in the same week, about singing on a few praise teams. As much as I wanted so badly to go and beg God to let me sing, I knew better.

Until then, I had never experience God instruct me not to do something that I enjoyed; something that I thought would bring Him glory. I didn’t understand it. But even in the midst of my ignorance there was peace. Although I so wanted to sing, I wanted even more to be obedient to God.

Many times, God tests us with the very things we love, to see who our hearts belong to, just like He did with the children of Israel in Deuteronomy chapter 8.

We show our love for God through our obedience to Him. The word of God teaches us that we exemplify our love for God by keeping Him commandments, see John 14:15. One of the most beautiful things about being obedient to Christ is, He will not allow us to feel slighted or left out when we obey Him. And the blessings of obedience tops anything we thought we would miss out on, had we not.

The Lord lead the Children of Israel to a place they couldn’t have even imagined in Deuteronomy 8:7-10.

Additionally, the blessing from my obedience allowed me the opportunity to be a blessing in another area of my life. I would not have had this opportunity had I accepted those singing request. Lifelong friendships where made and lives where changed through one act of obedience.

Have you ever been faced with a test of obeying God when you clearly know what His desire is for you? What was your response and what was the outcome?

Prayer: All knowing God and King, You have a plan and purpose for my life that requires me to be obedient to You. Sometimes to the point of denying my desires to fulfill Yours. But thanks be to God that Your word tells me that You will withhold no good thing from those who walk righteously in You. I ask that You give me the strength to be obedient to You and the wisdom to know that in the end, everything will work out for Your glory. In the name of Jesus, Amen!

Dodging Life’s Roadblocks

29 Jun

Guest Writer: Mary from The Square Owl

“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13

Have you ever had one of those days where things just keep getting in your way? No matter what it is you are trying to get done, things just keep popping up to distract you, aggravate you, or to delay you from doing what you want to do. Today was one of those days for me and it had four major roadblocks.

Days like today made me sit there and think, “Why is this happening?” Why did a customer call in angry to yell at me and make me upset? Why is it that there was construction on a road I always took that delayed me 20 minutes? Why is it that the weather turned bad around the same time I wanted to run on my break? Why is it that there was an accident on my way home and took me 45 minutes to get back? Why?

As I sat in my car today, I pondered each of these situations and came up with a common fact. Each roadblock was placed there to make me unhappy and to distract me from doing things that would make me happy. My morning was going fine until that customer called. I was going to go running with my office crew until they decided not to go due to weather (I went anyways). On my way back from my run, I was refreshed until I learned there was a construction detour that took me 20 minutes out of the way to get back to work. And lastly, on my drive home, I was excited to get home to write this post, and there was a 45 minute backup on the highway due to an accident.

Who wants to make me unhappy? Who wants to delay me from sharing Christ’s word? The evil one, satan. Now, you may be thinking that I am crazy for thinking satan was behind most of these roadblocks, but I kid you not, he was. Most people chalk it up to being just a bad day with a series of unfortunate events, but the truth is, satan thrives on making your life miserable and he will do anything to cut you down mentally and emotionally.

1 John 5:19-20: We know that we are of God, and the whole world is in the power of the evil one. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, to know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

How do you dodge life’s roadblocks?

The first thing to do is to learn to recognize roadblocks as attempts to tear you down. Once you know how these feel and look, you can choose to dodge them in full power. In the past, before I knew they were deliberate, I used to let them upset me and get to me. The anger from situations like these would stick with me and bring me down for hours or even days after, delaying what God really wanted me to do with my life. Lately, I have been trying hard to focus on what God wants, which gives satan a motive for wanting to distract me even more than normal.

The second thing to do is to pray. Say a quick prayer that God let’s you have patience and compassion in that moment. Pray that your anger does not overtake you, pray that God takes control of the situation, and pray that God gives you the strength to continue in your focus. This may seem impossible for you at first, but trust that God knows how to manage any situation that comes your way.

Luke 22:40: And when he came to the place he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

Lastly, look at these as learning situations for the future. Take note of how these issues come into play and prepare yourself for future distractions from the evil one. If he sees you happy, sees your family doing well, and sees your life is full of bliss, he will try hard to ruin that for you. Remember that he is trying to distract you from being happy in Christ’s love and trying to frustrate you to the point of disbelief. Once you let him influence your thoughts and heart, it will be hard to pull away without God’s hand.

Mark 4:19: But the cares of the world, and the delight in riches, and the desire for other things, enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.

Romans 12:2: Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Have you ever had a day like I had today? Have you ever sat down and wondered how you can let these issues not affect you in the way satan wants them to? If so, how do you go about avoiding these roadblocks? What are your favorite verses or prayers that help you get through these? Please share your comments below.

5 Summer Scents You Should Be Wearing

29 Jun

A while ago, I posted a video on Instagram, of a conversation I had with a creep coworker. He commented that I must have showered that day because I just smelled so good.

creep

“You smell better than cake batter…”

“Don’t mind me, I just came over to smell you.”

” I know when you have walked by because everything smells so good. “

 Recurrent Exchange

Coworker: “You know what I‘m about to ask you.”

Me: “It’s called Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel.”

These are legit comments/ conversations I encounter on a regular basis. I still struggle with if I should be weirded out or just grateful that I don’t smell like baby poop instead of baby powder. Question. What ever happened to compliments like, “you smell nice today”?

Anywho, if for whatever reason you long to be creeped out by individuals sniffing you and questioning your daily hygiene regimen, here’s a list of some amazing scents to include in your collection for this summa! Surprisingly, I’m not as creeped out, when I’m sniffing others because I admire their fragrance.

Unboxing

23 Jun

man in grassFor we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10 (NKJV)

Can I be honest? I used to struggle a lot with being comfortable with who I am. My spontaneous, impromptu way of living sometimes made me self-conscience. Especially when it dealt with building my relationship with Christ. You see, the only way to build a relationship, with Christ or anyone else for that matter, is to spend time together.

This is where my insecurities once steamed. Growing up in the church and being involved in countless ministries and developmental classes, there was always instructions on how to properly have alone time with Christ. The instructions would consist of something along the lines of “wakeup early in the morning to meet with God… read a Chapter of the Bible… pray to God and wait to hear from Him… Journal what you hear God saying…” I struggled with this because it seemed I could NEVER get this right. I thought it had to consistently look a certain way. Can you relate?

I just couldn’t seem to get my routine perfect. Then God revealed to me, “I never created you to be a routine person. I created you to be spontaneous for a reason. Yes, structure is good and necessary at times, but your spontaneity allows me to flow the way I need to in your life. There are times where in your quite time all I want you to do is sing to Me (Psalm 98:1). Or maybe something is really heavy on your heart and I just want you to journal and tell Me about it (1Peter 5:7). Then other times I just want you to intercede for others (Colossians 1:9). The spontaneous spirit I placed in you makes it viable for the Holy Spirit to flow and you to experience me in fresh new ways.”

The reality is, when we conform to something other than being led by Christ, we compromise one of the promises of God according to John 14:26.

Our culture is so conditioned to seek help outside of the help that truly matters. We are bombarded with countless materials like, “Ways to a Better Tomorrow”, “5 Steps to Experiencing Happiness Now”, “Prayers that Move God”, etc. These promises of  better, happier, more, sometimes makes it difficult to identify when the Helper is reminding us of what the Father said.

How are you allowing God to move in your life? Is He able to flow freely in you? If God spoke to you in a different way then what you are used to, would you be able to recognize it?

Prayer: God, help me to not box You into what I think You should be. Flow freely in my life so that Your will  be done through me. Allow me to be in tune with Your Holy Spirit so I don’t miss Your leading. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen!

Make The First Move

20 Jun

chessFocus Scripture: For it is [not your strength, but it is] God who is effectively at work in you, both to will and to work [that is, strengthening, energizing, and creating in you the longing and the ability to fulfill your purpose] for His good pleasure. Philippians 2:13

Recently, I heard stories from two individuals regarding their relationships with their fathers that caused me to think about mine. Our backgrounds and upbringings where different, but we shared similar emotions and expectations when it came to our fathers, when we were younger. We were angry because we couldn’t understand why our fathers made the decisions they did that affected our families the way they did.

But by the grace of God, we have all moved on from that place, and have forgiven our fathers. Another similarity we share that granted us the ability to move on from that place is, we were willing to make the first move. But, not without the work and will of God that worked in us to do His pleasure.

In order to get to this place, we had to be willing to forgive first, be vulnerable first, and be willing to be hurt again first.

Often times, in our relationships and interactions with people, we have expectations of how our encounters should go, only to find ourselves disappointed with the outcome.

That however is not an excuse for us to respond in ways that do not please God. The fact of the matter is, if the situation or person never changes, as Christians, we are obligated to operate in God honoring principals. But I’m so grateful that His word promises us that He will work in us both to will and do for His good pleasure. God never calls us to do something that He never equips us to accomplish.

Is there any area of your life that you need to make the first move? Do you need to let your guard down and begin to tare down the walls to allow God to strengthen, energize, and create in you the longing and the ability to fulfill your purpose?

Prayer: Merciful Father, You are so great! Thank You for showing me that the only expectation that is guaranteed to be met is through You alone. Thank You that not only do You have the power, but You also give me the power to want to do what pleases You. It won’t always be easy, but strengthen me to be willing to make the first move regardless of the outcome. And I am confident that You will get all the glory. In the matchless name of Jesus, Amen!

3 Things I’ve Learned From Dad

18 Jun

fathers dayHappy Father’s Day!

I’ve mentioned before, my relationship with my father hasn’t always been the best. Because of a lot of things we went through when I was younger, due to some of his actions, I didn’t respect him, as a father, as a man, as a person. So quite naturally, my lack of respect lead to me not listen to him at all. I’m grateful that my feelings have since changed and I have come to know my father to be a very wise man. We even share in a lot of similarities. Who knew? Here’s some of the wisdom my father has taught me.

  • Don’t Compromise.

Know what you believe and stand on it. There will be times where people will try to silence your voice or convince you to compromise your beliefs, don’t let them. Never be afraid to stand alone if you have to.

  • Always sit where you can see the door.

With everything that has been going on lately with hate crimes, terrorism, and random acts of foolishness, my father’s voice, ensuring that I’m always aware of my surrounds, is more prevalent than ever before. Whenever I’m out I’m always mindful of his advise, “Make sure you sit where you can see the door if anything happens.” He is always reminding me that I have to be aware of my surroundings at all times.

  • Serve Others.

My father had a servant’s heart. He is always doing something for others. Stopping on the side of the road to give someone a boost. Checking on the elderly in his community. Providing financial assistance to someone in need. Opening his home to friends and family to fellowship over food. The list goes on. His justification for serving other is, “It doesn’t cost you anything to be nice to someone.”

  • Extra Nugget: “If a guy likes you, you will know. You will never have to wonder how he feels. He will let it be known.”

A lot of who I am today is because of the strong man my father is. I love you dad, and Happy Father’s Day!

daddyo

What about you, what is some wisdom from your father you hold on to?

Lots of Love,

Tiffani

Budget Travel Tips- Airfare Edition

17 Jun

InShot_20160615_235846 Listen, I love nice things, like really nice things! Seriously though, if we’re being honest with ourselves, who doesn’t?!! A nice handbag, yes ma’am! Exclusive fragrance, yes, please! Luxurious travel, absolutely! I can’t begin to tell you how I’ve developed such an exquisite taste for luxury. And honestly, that doesn’t matter because as much as I love luxury,  I can also appreciate good budget travel tips! #TEAMSAVEACOIN  I mean who doesn’t want to learn how to start traveling more?

The Ultimate Budget Travel Tips

If you’re like me and you’re consistently trying to figure out how to make your Thousandaire reality line up with your Trillionaire desires, you’ve come to the right place. In this post, I’m going to share how you can dabble in the Trillionaire travel lifestyle while still living your Thousandaire travel reality. Below are 7 doable budget travel tips that will help you travel the world on a budget via inexpensive airfare.

Michelle

1. Be flexible

Whenever I get the best rates on plane tickets, it’s because I leave my travel dates open and search the entire month for ticket prices. In my experience, the least expensive days to travel are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, so these are typically the days I travel when my dates are flexible. That’s not to say that you can’t find good prices on other days, but these are the days that I have observed to consistently have good prices.

Google Flights is a great place to start your search. The Date Grid and Price Graph functions allow you to search for dates over a longer period of time in order to see when flights are the cheapest.

Google Flight cheap airfare search

2. Know when to buy

There has been a lot of mixed opinions on this topic. Some people believe there’s a best time to buy airline tickets and there’s a lot of budget travel tips out there pertaining to when to buy airline tickets. What I have seen during my many searches is that most flights tend to increase closer towards the end of the week. Here’s a couple of reasons I believe this to be true: 1) this is when most people tend to travel; 2) this is when most people get paid. So quite naturally, when the demand is high, so are the prices. If you can, try to purchase your airfare earlier in the week to avoid price increases. Disclaimer: In no way am I an Economist, just a Common Sense-ist.

3. Work, Work, Work, Work, Work, Work!

Seychelles beach
Image: http://photo.elsoar.com/

Nothing in life is free, and for a good price on travel, you’ve gotta be willing to do like Rihana said and do some work! As previously mentioned, when searching for flights, I typically start off at Google Flights or one of the other flight search engine sites, like Expedia or Orbitz. Remember, Southwest and some other discount airlines, don’t advertise on these flight search engine sites, so you have to go directly to their site to check prices.

Extra Nugget: When traveling on a budget, don’t be opposed to purchasing two one-way tickets or even tickets from two different carriers. There’s no best way to book flights. We’re simply trying to keep our coin; that may mean doing some unconventional things so we can get to Seychelles.

Budget Travel Trips in Dubai

4. Strike when the iron is hot!

I’ve been blessed to be able to take advantage of some pretty SWEET deals. But that was because I was prepared to get tickets as soon as the deal was available.

My #1 travel destination has always been to visit UAE, specifically Dubai, and in 2015, I had the opportunity to go, for a whopping $214 RT. Etihad Airways had an error fare on Christmas Day 2014, and I was already thinking about buying myself a ticket to Dubai for Christmas. Additionally, I have family and friends that live in the UAE so I was able to lodge for the $free.99. If that’s not traveling on a budget, I don’t know what is!

Two of my most frequently stalked travel deal sites are The Flight Deal and Secret Flying. You have to be ready to purchase when you see the deal because they typically don’t last past a few days.

Extra Nugget

The majority of my international travel is to places where I have friends and family, so I can stay with them and not have to worry about lodging expenses. Plus, you get to experience the area as the locals do!

5. Create An Account

If you don’t already, I would suggest creating a traveling account to help you with budgeting for traveling. I started out seriously traveling when I was in my 20s. Because I didn’t have that much money, it was very important for me to be smart about traveling. From personal experience, this budget travel tip can help you successfully pinpoint how to travel on a budget in your 20s. Deposit a few dollars in there every week or so until you have at least $500. You would be surprised where you could go for $500 on a sweet travel deal!

I understand that everyone that’s reading this may not be single. If you are looking to save on travel with a family, $500 might not be enough for you all to start with. If this is the case, I would recommend saving anywhere from $750-$1000 in your account depending on your family size. Some banks will even start you off by giving you anywhere from $100-$500 for opening an account with them. Use that to your advantage.

Once you have your minimum travel amount saved, you can start searching for airline tickets using the tips above. Please note: Once you start to build your account, it will be tempting to start looking at flights. Don’t, until you have at least your minimum travel amount and can purchase the tickets right then.

How to travel on a budget

I smile because I get to keep my coins!

6. Get to the points

DISCLAIMER: I do not recommend this tip if you are not responsible with managing consumer credit! Breakfast with Tiffani does not condone creating debt in the name of traveling on a budget!

If you are responsible with managing consumer credit, this tip is for you. Being responsible with managing consumer credit means you do not carry a balance on a credit card. A lot of credit cards, specifically travel cards, will offer a sign-up bonus in exchange for charging a minimum amount within a specified amount of time. Once you have hit that minimum within the specified time frame, they will give you a sign-up bonus. For travelcards, the bonus is typically in the form of airline points.

Simple Example

For example, Card A has a sign-up bonus of 60,000 points. The Card A company will be more than happy to give you those 60,000 points as long as you charge $4,000 within the first 3 months of opening the credit card account. Once you hit $4,000, the Card A company will post 60,000 points to your account to use as you wish.

And it’s just that simple! Depending on who you fly, when, and where you are going, 60,000 points can go a LONG way!

An additional thing to consider is if an airline-branded credit card or a regular bank travel credit card would be best for you. What’s the difference you ask?

An airline-branded credit card is a card that you are only allowed to redeem points at that airline only. You can use the card anywhere, but you tend to get more points when you use it at that airline vs somewhere else.

A regular bank travel credit card is a card that you are allowed to redeem points at multiple airlines that are partnered with the bank. As with airline-branded credit cards, you can use the card anywhere, but you tend to get more points on travel-related purchases.

When choosing between an airline-branded credit card vs. a regular bank travel card, it’s like considering, would you rather a Visa or American Express Gift Card that you can use anywhere or a store-specific card that you can only use at that store.

Budget travel tips in Guatemala

7. Travel Rewards Programs

Kindrick Lamar said it best, “Loyalty, loyalty, loyalty.” So, this tip might contradict one of the previously shared budget travel tips in point #3. Before you cancel me, hear me out.

Now, more than ever, brands want to know that you are loyal to them. So much so, that they are willing to reward you for that loyalty as shared in the tip above.

When you are loyal to one airline and accumulate status and points with them, you can then use those points in exchange for free travel. Depending on your status, they will show their appreciation for your loyalty by providing you with perks. Those perks include free upgrades, admission to their pre-flight lounge, free wifi, etc.

Now, I would be doing you a disservice if I didn’t state that travel rewards programs are really only beneficial if you travel frequently enough to accumulate points for free travel. If you’re the occasional traveler, this traveling on a budget tip may not be one for you to focus on.

Extra Nugget

Are you a frequent flyer, flying multiple times a month? If you aren’t committed to flying one particular airline, take advantage of airline’s status match programs. Just like most businesses that will price match a competitor’s price, so will airlines. Airline companies will match your status in an effort to ensure you continue flying with them. Learn more about Airline Status Matching in the Instagram post below.
